Mary Ellen Capek is lead author of Effective Philanthropy: Organizational Success through Deep Diversity and Gender Equality (MIT Press, 2006), winner of the 2007 Independent Sector/ARNOVA Virginia Hodgkinson Research Prize for the Best Book on Philanthropy and the Nonprofit Sector that Informs Policy and Practice.  She currently serves as senior advisor to the Diversity in Philanthropy Project, a national collaborative funded by the California Endowment, W.K.Kellogg Foundation, Atlantic Philanthropies, Ford Foundation, and others that works to institutionalize deep diversity across the philanthropic sector. Other current and former clients include Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Donors Forum, Council of Michigan Foundations, Ohio Grantmakers Forum, Colorado Association of Grantmakers, Hispanics in Philanthropy, Council on Foundations, Rutgers University Center for Nonprofit and Philanthropic Leadership, Conference of Southwest Foundations, New Mexico Association of Grantmakers, Chicago Women in Philanthropy, Girl Scouts USA, and the Nokomis Foundation.

Janet D. Spector is Professor Emerita of Anthropology/Archaeology, University of Minnesota, and former Assistant Provost for Academic Affairs. She is a pioneer feminist archaeologist who published What This Awl Means (Minnesota Historical Society, 1993), a ground-breaking book still in print. Under the aegis of Capek & Associates, Janet did in-depth background research for the Effective Philanthropy book and provided program evaluation and strategic planning consulting for American Field Services/USA. She also serves as consultant for MediaDesigns, Inc., working with multimedia training and educational materials.
